Dr Rita Gardner CBERita Gardner is Director of the Royal Geographical Society (with the Institute of British Geographers). The Society supports research, education, policy and wider public engagement with geography. She has been involved in formulating, leading and advising the DCSF Action for Geography and was non-political advisor for Geography to the Secretary of State for Education and Skills, 2006-2008.She has recently served and continues to serve on national and international committees including: Chair of the Steering Group for the Subject Centre for Teaching and Learning of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences in Higher Education; Co-Chair of the Exhibition Road Cultural Group; Secretary General of the European Association of Geographical Societies; Senior Advisor to the British Council. Prior to joining the Society, she was Reader and Head of the Environmental Science Unit at Queen Mary & Westfield College (1994-1996). She has advised the Channel 4 TV series 'Landshapes' and the series entitled 'Britain from Above' for BBC 1 and BBC2 TV. She was educated at University College London and the University of Oxford, holds the Busk Medal for her work in geomorphology. She was awarded a CBE for 'Services to Geography' in 2003. |
