 The Board comprises a minimum of three Trustees including the Chairman but excluding the Company Secretary. Up to a maximum of seven Trustees can be appointed. Current membership is as follows:
Sir Rudolph Agnew
Sir Rudolph has many years experience working at a senior level in the extractive industry, rising to Group Chief Executive (1978-89) and Chairman (1983-89) of Consolidated Goldfields, the second largest gold producer in the western world in the 1980s. He has also been Chairman of Lasmo (1994-2000) and Stena International (since 1990), in addition to directorships with a range of other companies. Sir Rudolph was a Trustee of WWF(UK) from 1983-89, and was chairman of the WCMC 2000 Board from 1989 to 2007.
Patrick Haighton
Patrick's background combines corporate management and strategic consulting. Corporate stints include Operations management in Africa and the Middle East with Shell International, Manager of Alaskan Oil for Standard Oil/BP in the US, Strategic Planning Chief Executive for the BOC Group. Consulting includes McKinsey in the US, PHI Associates and CRA from the UK. Since 1981 Patrick’s independent strategy consulting practice has ranged over a wide variety of clients from large multinationals to small companies and includes project management and interim executive assignments. He is a Chartered Engineer with an engineering degree from Cambridge (St Catharine's College) and an MBA in finance from Wharton, University of Pennsylvania.
Robert Napier (Chairman)
Robert Napier was Chief Executive of WWF-UK from 1999 to 2007. Before that he spent 16 years at Redland plc, where he was successively Financial Director, Managing Director and Chief Executive. Robert is currently a Non-Executive Director of Anglian Water Services and Chair of the Sustainability Committee of AWG plc. He was formerly Chairman of the CBI Transport Policy Committee and President of the National Council of Building Material Producers. His community activities include being a Governor of Sedbergh School and a Trustee of Baynards Zambia Trust. Robert has been Chairman of the Board since October 2007.
Alasdair Poore
After qualifying as a barrister Alasdair worked for 7 years on patents and licensing within Shell UK. He was a partner in a City of London law firm specialising in intellectual property before returning to Cambridge to join Mills & Reeve. Alasdair has substantial experience on the exploitation of and protection of ideas and research emanating from both public institutions and private companies. He is also a Registered Trade Mark Agent, Registered Patent Agent and a member of the governing Council of the Chartered Institute of Patent Agents. Alasdair read law and natural sciences at Cambridge University (St Catherine's College).
Ian Cray (Treasurer)
As a Chartered Management Accountant, Ian has private sector board-level financial management experience in FTSE 100 companies. As Group Treasurer for Diageo PLC, he was responsible for leading the global treasury for operating centres in London, New York and Amsterdam and for the company's interests in 125 countries. At United Biscuits (turnover of £1.3bn), he led finance, strategy and legal affairs. His career included an assignment in Canada, where he was responsible for the finance function of UDV following the introduction of the Free Trade Agreement between Canada, USA and Mexico. Ian now teaches maths in a local Cambridge school whilst applying his financial experience in the non-profit sector.
Ray Gambell OBE (Company Secretary)
Ray was the Secretary to the International Whaling Commission for 24 years, closely involved in advising on the regulation of the whaling industry and the administration of international scientific research into whales and whaling. He was awarded the OBE (Officer of the Order of the British Empire) in the Queen’s 1994 New Year's Honours for his services to the biology and conservation of whales, on which he has published more than 70 scientific papers and books.
